don't want to learn on my wing, I decided to take the EAA Sheet metal
workshop in Riverside, CA. The workshop is a two day event, from
8-5:30 on Saturday, and from 8-3:30 on Sunday. During the two days,
you and one other person (picked at random) work together to construct
an all aluminum wing section, complete with hinge and stylized "flap"
of sorts.
All this teaches you how to:
1. Mark and cut aluminum
2. Fabricate ribs and various sections
3. locate, drill and transfer holes using various methods including fans
4. Rivet, rivet and rivet some more - flush, round head, blind, and
more...
More than anything, Buck, the instructor, which came all the way from
Wisconsin, was pushing the idea of learning to think about the
instructions vs. the actual work - where instructions asked for each
skin to be marked separately, Buck showed us how to anticipate the
steps and combine them to create a more flow efficient process.
I've included some pics of the work we did with final results... all
in all, it was a fun, and more than anything, it gave me confidence to
get started on my project.
