after dusk, to the CubCrafters factory in Yakima. I was feeling a bit
like I was out on a limb building the wings without external reference
or input, so, even through I'm feeling good about the process in
general, I thought a visit would help. And, if nothing else, it's good
to go somewhere else, even if for a day. Yakima is located in a
beautiful part of Washington State, with the final to rwy 27 seemingly
at the base of a large volcano... no it's not right there, in fact
it's more than 100 miles away (or so), but it's so large it seems to
loom.
Tips I wanted to note that were useful from the visit -
1. When drilling, especially blind holes (skins to ribs) - use the #40
first, then enlarge to a #30.
2. When taping the skins on, flip the tape or fold it to avoid getting
the glue on the skin - this allows you to pull the tape as well as
avoid the clean up afterward.
3. I created some videos of the installation process of the skins:
Also, I got the landing light kit for the left wing. When conversing
with the factory installer, he said that as far as the stall warning
skin work, all one has to do is to drill, using a #30 bit, the corners
of the center square, then the center, enlarge it with a unibit, then
use a fine file to connect the remaining bits. For the two outlying
rectangles, use a #30 bit top and bottom, enlarge to 3/32, then
connect with a 3/32 file.
